SATURDAY PUZZLE — I’ll call this puzzle classic Andy Kravis and Erik Agard, although it feels funny to use the term “classic” to refer to two extremely young people, practically children. But no matter! They have flair, and when working together create puzzles with a distinctive, improvisatory feel. There are times when I think I can tell when one particular entry begets another, in a themeless puzzle, and it makes the solve cozy and fun. Maybe that flow is a little reminiscent of a game show, something both these constructors have in common, or maybe it’s something else to do with their personalities, but they always come up with appealing and gratifying grids.
I wouldn’t say that today’s solve was diabolical, but there was a touch of crustiness to some of its entries, like SEE IF I CARE, SORE AT, CITATION, NO USE and the exasperated expression SOME PEOPLE! Also, all the animals were dangerous or sullen. Sometimes you get the cherry, sometimes you get the PIT, right?
16A: This is a classic that would logically be prohibited from airing in Germany during World War II, CASABLANCA. Once the movie did make its way to West German screens, in 1952, it was dubbed, and all of its references to Nazis were scrubbed — the resistance fighter Victor Laszlo became a Norwegian atomic physicist, for example. The unaltered film didn’t appear there until 1975!
33A: I guess a golf buff might have an inkling here, or at the very least an idea of what the constructors are talking about — apparently, the narrowing and lengthening of particular golf holes to make them more challenging for particular “long hitters,” otherwise known as TIGER PROOFING. The Tiger here is Mr. Woods, and one of the more famous courses to have undergone this remodeling was Augusta National, where the same Mr. Woods just won his 15th major tournament; maybe TIGER PROOFING is like Scotchgard and needs to be redone every few years. With the NEMEAN lion and NALA nearby, we just needed a bear in this puzzle.
41A: We usually see this entry clued as “mob bosses,” but CAPOS (“heads”) are also little pieces that clamp onto the neck of a guitar to shorten strings up and change their pitch, changing G CHORDS, for instance, to something higher.
45A: Not a highbrow reference; if you’re oblivious to bodega cold cases and their enormous cans of Arizona iced tea, this entry will make no sense. NESTEA is a competitor.
13D: A couple of clues today were personal gimmes, not always a given on a Saturday. I guess it’s the “cocktail party effect” or some other self-identification, but the 1967 Supreme Court case “Loving v. Virginia” is easy for me to remember, and I knew it had to do with MARRIAGE. Its conclusion, wrote Chief Justice Earl Warren, is that "the freedom to marry, or not marry, a person of another race resides with the individual, and cannot be infringed by the State."
23D: In this case, “Ladysmith” was the hint I needed to solve for something I really don’t know much about, South Africa’s BOER WAR. The singing group Ladysmith Black Mambazo has been around since 1960, and takes its name from the town in question, as well as the strong black ox and an ax, or mambazo, to “cut down the competition.”
30D: This is a debut and refers to something that I wonder about every so often — it seems as if we’ve long been anticipating an onslaught of entertainment, education and other applications involving a VR HEADSET. There are a lot of stories discussing the reasons these devices aren’t in every home, most of which mention their expense and ridiculous appearance.
36D: It took a minute to realize that this clue isn’t morbid in a Wild West way — when you’re “in it,” getting letters wrong in HANGMAN mean your little man gets his limbs — once they’re all drawn in, you’re done, pardner.
As always, Erik and I had a blast working together. We had a tough time cluing HANGMAN, but the editing team came up with the superb clue [Bad choices in it might cost you an arm and a leg]. We wanted to share a few of our favorite clues that hit the cutting room floor:
[PDA screen?] for KISS CAM
[Forward-looking figure?] for LOT
[Part of a subway series] for TRAIN STOP
Jon Delfin, a constructor, super solver and seven-time A.C.P.T. winner, is the subject of an interesting profile and video this week by Wufei Yu in NY City Lens.
